Conference USA is in negotiations with New Mexico State, Liberty and UConn to join the league, a person with knowledge of the situation tells The Athletic. Negotiations with UConn pertain only to football.
The potential additions would come as C-USA is down to six current members. Six C-USA schools are set to join the American Athletic Conference in the coming years and two more are set to join the Sun Belt, with Marshall potentially leaving C-USA to join the Sun Belt as well.
By adding three schools that currently have independent football programs, the league would begin to restock with Football Bowl Subdivision members. NMSU and Liberty would be all-sports members.
The potential additions of these three schools would be just the first step as the conference works to reshape itself, and the league will have significant resources to grow its programs through a combination of exit fees from departing members and entrance fees from new members.
