Man reportedly airlifted from Supreme Court steps after attempting to set himself on fire – USA TODAY

WASHINGTON – A man attempted to set himself on fire on the steps of the Supreme Court Friday evening, according to a tweet from a Fox News producer

The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that a medical helicopter landed near the Capitol for a medical emergency.

In a video tweeted by a Fox reporter, the helicopter was shown landing on the steps of the nation’s highest court. Another video from Fox showed a U.S. Park Police helicopter flying near the Capitol.

Two streets near the Supreme Court were momentarily closed as a result of the emergency.

The incident comes after a false alarm on Wednesday, when the Capitol Police evacuated the Capitol complex after spotting a plane they deemed a “probable threat.”

After the evacuation, authorities determined the plane was actually carrying the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights for a parachuting stunt over Nationals Park baseball stadium, home of the Washington Nationals, for Military Appreciation Night.

“Every week the USCP is made aware of hundreds of authorized flights in the restricted airspace. It is extremely unusual not to be made aware of a flight in advance,” the Capitol Police said in a statement following the Wednesday incident. “As soon as it was determined that we were not given advanced notice of an approved flight, our officers followed USCP policies and procedures and immediately led everyone safely out of the Congressional buildings. Seconds matter.”

The FAA said in a statement about the evacuation: “We deeply regret that we contributed to a precautionary evacuation of the Capitol complex and apologize for the disruption and fear experienced by those who work there.”
